Recycling around the Christmas tree

Send recyclable Christmas cards

Plain Christmas and other greetings cards can be recycled as they are made from paper. Cards with glitter are not recyclable and must be disposed of in your rubbish bin.

A top tip for any unrecyclable cards: Cut them up into smaller rectangles and use them next year as gift tags.

Avoid shiny wrapping

Glossy or laminated gift wrap cannot be recycled.

Newsprint, paper grocery bags, the brown paper from inside your packaging or other natural-fibre paper are a great alternative, as are gift bags that can be used several times – or, even better, reusable shopping bags or totes.

A quick way to check is to scrunch your wrapping paper into a ball. If it stays scrunched, it should be recyclable, but if it opens out, it needs to go in your rubbish bin.

Don’t forget about the box

As online shopping continues to increase, so do the number of boxes being shipped. Most cardboard boxes are high-value recyclables, but the sheer volume of them means they often overflow your recycling bin.

If you receive gifts by mail this year, break down the cardboard boxes to save space and make sure they end up dry and in your recycling bin.

Don’t be fooled by the three-arrow triangle

Did you know that not all plastics marked with a recycling symbol are recyclable.

Don’t just recycle – recycle right!
