Council shows support for Srebrenica Memorial Day

Tuesday 11 July marks the 28th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, in which over 8,000 Muslim men and boys were murdered in the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War, simply because of their Muslim identity.

As an organisation, Havant Borough Council believe that we must ensure that we never forget about the genocide and reaffirm our commitment to standing up against hatred and prejudice.

This year's Srebrenica Memorial Day Theme "Together we are one" seeks to help people in the UK better understand the behaviours and influences around them that can either build or damage the cohesion of communities and equip them with the skills and confidence to challenge such behaviours.

Encouraging people to reflect upon how they can foster an environment that helps emphasise the similarities between groups and find common ground with people from different backgrounds instead of focusing on a single facet of their identity.

The Leader of Havant Borough Council, Alex Rennie, said: "Having been to Srebrenica and spoken with those that survived the genocide, I believe its vital to understand and remember those victims. On Srebrenica Memorial Day we will fly the flag to remember and honour those who were brutally murdered because of hate and commit ourselves to working towards building a more cohesive, stronger and safer society free from hatred, discrimination and prejudice."
