Plastic recycling bins are now in place across the borough to support and encourage continued plastic recycling.

The council has introduced 1100 litre bins at various locations - these are listed below:

Sites

  • Hollybank Recreation Car Park, Southleigh Road, Emsworth
  • The Leisure Centre, Civic Road, Havant
  • Elm Grove Car Park, Hollow Lane, Hayling Island
  • Tidworth Road Car Park, Tidworth Road, Leigh Park
  • Asda Car Park, Hambledon Road, Waterlooville

You can also find your nearest site using the Where I Live page.

Remember: your recycling should be clean, dry and loose. This helps reduce contamination and ensures materials can be effectively sorted and recycled.

It’s also important to place only the correct materials in the plastic bins to avoid spoiling the quality of other recyclable items.

Please do not leave anything on the ground around the recycling bins. This creates a safety hazard and is considered fly-tipping, which is a criminal offence. If a plastic bin appears full please visit another nearby plastic recycling site.

What you can recycle

You can put the following items in the recycling bins:

  • Plastic pots (e.g. yoghurt pots, non-black plant pots)
  • Plastic tubs (e.g. margarine and ice cream tubs, biscuit tubs)
  • Plastic trays (e.g. meat trays, fruit & veg punnets)

What we don't take

The following items cannot be put into the recycling bins:

  • Black plastics
  • Plastic films
  • Plastic wrappers
  • Carrier bags
  • Polystyrene
  • Household waste
  • Litter

Where does the plastic go?

Instead of going to the Portsmouth Material Recovery Facility, the plastics are collected and sent to a re-processing facility in the UK. The plastics are then shredded, washed, and pelletised, ready to be made back into food containers where possible and other products where not. For more information, visit Biffa's website.
