Residents will soon see four new Refuse Collection Vehicles (bin trucks) on the streets of the borough, collecting their rubbish and recycling.

The new RCVs will replace some of the aging fleet that are 10 years old and coming to the end of their working life.

Leasing the vehicles will enable the council to operate more cost‑effectively and ensure value for money over the next three years. This approach supports the long‑term sustainability of this essential service as it transitions into a new in‑house model for waste and recycling collections, ensuring it is fit for the future.

Councillor Netty Shepherd, Cabinet lead for Commercial, said, “We are investing in the future of our environmental services, ensuring that the service runs better and more efficiently.

“We have dedicated a significant amount into replacing vehicles, which will minimise potential breakdowns that cause disruption to bin collections borough-wide, in order to provide a more reliable service for our residents.”

The four vehicles are fitted with electric bin lifts, which lowers fuel consumption by around nine per cent, a major reduction on the environmental impact.  Each vehicle holds up to 11 tonnes of waste, which is equivalent to 390 household bins that are full.

The council's investment into the waste service will not only ensure that residents receive an excellent rubbish and recycling service, it will also assist in the reduction of carbon emissions, in line with the target of being ‘net zero’ by 2045.

The new vehicles are available to view on Havant Borough Council's YouTube channel.
