Havant Borough Council successfully delivered a Functional Fitness MOT event for residents aged 50 and over at Hayling Island Community Centre on Wednesday 28 January.
The event formed part of Hampshire County Council’s Live Longer Better campaign, which aims to help older residents stay independent, maintain an active lifestyle, and continue doing the activities they enjoy.
More than 80 residents attended and took part in a range of simple fitness tests designed to measure strength, balance and flexibility.
The tests—including sit‑to‑stand, one‑leg balance and grip strength—provided participants with insights into their physical abilities and areas of improvement, using national benchmarks for people of the same age. Attendees were also able to access advice and information on local activities and support services.
The event was delivered with support from Horizon Leisure Trust, Havant & Waterlooville PCN, Hayling & Emsworth PCN, the Havant & Waterlooville Community Therapy Team (NHS), and Physio‑Logical. Former Mayor of Havant Rosy Raines also attended, along with Get Up and Go Ambassador Graham May.
Participant Nicky Brown from Hayling said: “You don’t know until you know! What you think, and what you can actually do, are different. I was pleasantly surprised that I was above average on most things and encouraged to do more.”
Councillor Gillian Harris, Cabinet Lead for Regeneration and Communities, added: “We are so pleased at the success of this event, and the feedback from attendees shows how valuable these tests can be in building confidence. We’re proud to support initiatives that help people live longer, healthier and happier lives.
"Don’t worry if you missed this popular event, as there are many more fitness activities that you can take part in."
