Putting plastics into new plastic recycling bin

Havant Borough Council has introduced new public recycling bins throughout the borough to help expand upon the range of household plastics that are currently collected with home recycling collections.

Plastic pots, tubs and trays can now be taken to one of five sites in the borough for recycling. This is in support of the Simpler Recycling policy introduced by central government to make recycling simpler and enabling householders to recycle as much waste as possible.

Plastic items that currently cannot be recycled in kerbside collections, such as:

  • Plastic pots (e.g. yoghurt pots, non-black plant pots)
  • Plastic tubs (e.g. margarine & ice cream tubs, biscuit tubs)
  • Plastic trays (e.g. meat trays, fruit & veg punnets)

can now be taken to the new 1,100 litre recycling bins, that can be found in the following locations:

  • Hollybank Recreation Car Park, Southleigh Road, Emsworth
  • The Leisure Centre, Civic Road, Havant
  • Elm Grove Car Park, Hollow Lane, Hayling Island
  • Tidworth Road Car Park, Tidworth Road, Leigh Park
  • Asda Car Park, Hambledon Road, Waterlooville

These items will then be collected and taken to a dedicated plastic recycling facility for processing.

Councillor Netty Shepherd, Cabinet Lead for Commercial Services said “As well as supporting central government’s Simpler Recycling policy we have also listened to our residents,  who are keen to recycle more!

"By introducing these large bins at key locations around the borough we want to ensure that recycling is made easy to enable and encourage residents to recycle as much waste as possible.

"We all realise our personal role and responsibility to reduce the amount of plastics we use, and recycle whenever we can.  With that in mind I’m delighted to see these additional recycling bins installed throughout the borough.

"As a council, we are committed to improving the recycling opportunities available to our residents and look forward to their support in helping us to reduce, re-use and recycle.”

The plastics collected from the new bins will be collected by Biffa Commercial and will be sent to one of their re-processing facilities in the UK (Biffa Polymers). Biffa Polymers then shred, wash, and pelletise them, ready to be made back into food containers where possible and other products where not. For more information, visit Plastic Recycling | Biffa.
