Recycle right after Christmas!

Now that Christmas is behind us, there’s still plenty to do with the clear up! As you make space in your cupboards and fridges, please bear in mind the following:

Glass recycling:

Don't forget that all your glass bottles and jars can be recycled, whatever shape or size. Just give them a quick rinse and take them to your nearest glass bank. As it’s a peak time of year for glass recycling, you may find a bank is temporarily full – if so, please don’t leave glass next to the bin as this is unsafe, and instead return with your glass at a later date.

Christmas trees:

If you are subscribed to our garden waste collection service, Christmas trees can be chopped and recycled in your brown lidded bin. Chopped pieces should be no bigger than 7.5 centimetres (3 inches) in diameter.

If you are not signed up to our garden waste collection service, real trees can be recycled at a local Household Waste Recycling Centre.#

Christmas cards and wrapping paper:

Do remember that if your wrapping paper is shiny, metallic, foiled and/or laminated, it can’t be put in your recycling bin.  Not sure if your paper is recyclable? There is a simple scrunch test you can do – just scrunch the wrapping paper in your hands - if it stays in a ball it can go in your recycling bin!

Don’t forget to remove tape and staples from any paper you do put in the recycling bin.

Batteries and electrical goods:

Batteries can be dangerous when incorrectly disposed of, and electrical goods need to be recycled correctly. Both can be recycled at a local Household Waste Recycling Centre, or at sites listed on the Recycle Now website.

Bin collections over the Christmas and New Year period are working to a revised timetable. For more details on recycling in the borough and to sign up to the Recycle Right newsletter, visit www.havant.gov.uk/recycling.
