Havant Borough Council has successfully obtained funding from Parkinson’s UK to help support those with Parkinson’s in the borough.
The council has secured £5,942 to fund instructor costs and hall hire for two new classes, giving those with Parkinson’s and their carers the opportunity to take part in fun and gentle physical activities.
Details for the two classes are as follows:
Qigong – gentle exercise style that uses movement and mindfulness to increase flexibility, improve balance and help walking. Classes will take place 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm every Friday at Bedhampton Community Centre (PO9 3ES), starting from 15 August. £2.50 per person.
Strength and Balance – helps maintain general fitness. Classes will take place 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm every Thursday at Hayling Island Community Centre (PO11 0HB), starting from 21 August. £2.50 per person.
The classes chosen were based on successful taster sessions in conjunction with the Parkinson's Cafe. Members reported that they would prefer activities aimed at people with Parkinson's and their carers, of which there were none in the borough.
Councillor Gillian Harris, Cabinet Lead for Regeneration and Communities, said: “Staying active has a positive impact on everyone; both physically and mentally. For people with Parkinson’s, exercise can help maintain your health, lift your mood, and manage symptoms. The more active you are, the easier it is to live well with Parkinson’s.”
