Havant Borough Council is saddened to hear of the passing of former councillor, Mayor and Honorary Alderman, Ken Smith.

Ken served on Havant Borough Council for a period of 17 years and held several portfolios and Cabinet posts, including Economic Development and Tourism - an area which he took a great interest in.

Ken performed various roles on many committees and panels, including Licensing Committee, Community Safety Panel, Development Control Committee, Coastal Defence Panel, Governance & Audit Committee, Planning Policy and Human Resources committees.

He also represented the council on several boards, including Langstone Harbour Board, Chichester Harbour Conservancy, Bedhampton Community Association, the Hampshire (South East) Road Safety Committee and the Southern and South East Tourist Board.

Ken was elected Deputy Mayor in 2010 before becoming Mayor of Havant in 2011 and served this role with distinction, supporting and raising funds for several charities.

In 2023, in recognition of Ken’s outstanding service he was given the title of Honorary Alderman of the Borough of Havant.

Councillor Peter Wade, the current Mayor of Havant, says: "I was very sad to hear this news. Ken Smith was highly respected and regarded, and was an excellent former councillor and Mayor.

"He cared deeply about the borough, particularly his ward of Bedhampton, and will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with his family and friends."

Councillor Phil Munday, Leader of the Council, says: "On behalf of the council and the borough, I would like to send my condolences and thoughts to Ken's wife, family and friends.

Bedhampton ward Councillor, Philippa Gray added: “I met Ken as soon as I became involved in community activities, which tells you how much he was dedicated to Bedhampton.  His unwavering commitment, empathy, and enthusiasm were inspiring. He knew how to work patiently and skilfully to get things done.

“It is always good to work with people with differing political views, working with Ken was especially rewarding and meeting him always a joyful experience.”
