Veterans muster to mark Falklands Memorial Day

A memorial bench is set to be unveiled on Wednesday 14 June in the Meridian Centre, Havant to mark Falklands Memorial Day.

The bench, made by Havant Men's Shed and donated by local business Lockheed Martin, will be unveiled by the Leader of Havant Borough Council, Councillor Alex Rennie.

Invited guests will include The Mayor of Havant who will be joined by representatives from the armed forces, past and present, during a short service to commemorate the liberation of the Island by British forces in 1982.

Argentine forces invaded the Falklands on 2 April 1982, but the Islands were recaptured by British forces on 14 June - with the loss of 255 British military personnel.

Councillor Alex Rennie, Leader of Havant Borough Council, said: “The huge crowds that attend the Remembrance service in the town centre demonstrates the deep affection our residents have for our armed forces and all they do across the globe to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.

“It remains as important as ever that we remember the lives lost and the sacrifices of so many people in war and conflict. This touches all of us and this new memorial bench acts as a fitting reminder to our community.”

Members of the public are welcome to join the short unveiling service that will take place at 10am on Wednesday 14 June inside the Meridian Centre, Havant Town Centre.
