Supporting residents who need help to pay their council tax

Residents in the borough who need additional help to pay for their council tax will receive more support.

At a meeting of Havant Borough Council’s Cabinet on Wednesday 7 June, councillors agreed to the Discretionary element of the Council Tax Support Fund provided by Central Government.

The discretionary element of the Council Tax Support Fund 2023-24 will be used to increase the limit of support for existing Local Council Tax Support claimants, from £25, up to a maximum of £50.

It was then agreed the remaining funds would support new claimants, during this financial year on a first come, first served basis, with a limit of up to £50 of support.

Cabinet lead for Finance, Councillor Neil Bowdell, said: “Supporting the more vulnerable residents in our community is a key priority for the council, and doubling the discretionary payment will go a long way to ensure they are receiving all the help we can offer to those on low incomes.”

Those eligible do not have to apply, payment will be made automatically through the existing Local Council Tax Support mechanisms.
