Council invests in expertise to protect local ecology

Havant Borough Council has invested in a highly skilled Ecologist to help promote and protect the rich biodiversity of the borough.

Tristan Norton joins the council with a wealth of experience on ecological matters. With a strong local knowledge of the area (having worked in supporting over-wintering birds in the Solent, for example), Tristan also has particular expertise in botany and ornithology.

As Principal Ecologist at the council, Tristan will support a wide range of projects and services including:

  • Supporting Biodiversity Net Gain, contributing to the recovery of nature when development takes place.
  • Promoting the biodiversity of the borough whilst engaging with stakeholders to generate and support schemes that respect and nurture local ecology.
  • Ensuring critical ecological information is available to inform and influence development within the borough.
  • Supporting effective and robust planning policy that best reflects the needs of - and demands upon - the natural environment of the borough.

Councillor Elizabeth Lloyd (Cabinet Lead for Planning, Environment and Water Quality) said "I'm delighted to see Havant Borough Council's investment into the very best skills to understand, represent and promote the Borough’s rich natural environment. From our beautiful shoreline to our mature woodlands, it is heartening to know the expertise is there to ensure the borough's ecological assets will be fairly represented and robustly defended when needed."
