Havant Borough Council invites residents to remember the victims of the Holocaust during a short non-denominational commemorative service being held on Friday 26 January.

The service, starting at 11am, will be held at the Holocaust Memorial in Havant Cemetery, New Lane, Havant. It will be led by Councillor Leah Turner and will include a reading by the Mayor of Havant.

Holocaust Memorial Day is recognised internationally to remember the six million Jews that were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of other people killed from 1933-1945 under the Nazi persecution and in genocides around the world since.

The theme for this year's service is ‘Fragility of Freedom,’ which encourages people to reflect on their own freedom and remember those who risked their lives and lost their freedom.

Councillor Leah Turner said “Freedom means different things to everyone, but we all know that it is fragile and should not be taken for granted.

“By commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day, we hope to learn from the past and prevent such atrocities from happening again.”

The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Rosy Raines, added: “We must stand up against hatred, prejudice, and discrimination of any kind.

“I invite all residents in the borough to attend the service to honour the survivors, pay respects to the millions of lives lost, and keep their memories alive for future generations.”

After the service, guest speaker Bryan Huberman - a 2nd Generation speaker from 45 Aid Society - will be at the Plaza telling the life story of his late father Alfred Huberman. This will be a moving and informative account of life before, during, and after the Holocaust.
