Havant marks Holocaust Memorial Day by standing together

Monday, 20 January, 2020

Havant Borough Council invites residents to remember victims of the Holocaust during a commemorative service being held on Monday 27 January.

The ceremony, starting at 11am, will be held at the Holocaust Memorial in Havant Cemetery, Eastern Road, Havant, PO9 2JQ.

The theme for this year’s commemoration is ‘Stand Together’ and will be led by Councillor Leah Turner.

Readings will also be given by The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Diana Patrick and local students from schools around the borough.

The service will conclude with the laying of wreaths, during which a pupil from Hayling College will play the theme tune to Schindler’s List on the violin.

Following the event, refreshments will be available in the Event Suite at The Public Service Plaza, Havant, PO9 2AX. Artwork from the schools will also be on display.

Cllr Leah Turner, Cabinet Lead for Finance and Coastal Communities, said: “On Monday 27 January 2020, Havant Borough Council will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp and the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.”

“We will be joined in our non-denominational service by many secondary school children from our borough. By remembering all those who lost their lives, we hope that this atrocity may be prevented from happening again.”
