Havant Borough Council encourages people to walk their way to
health
Walk your way to health. That’s the message
Havant Borough Council (HBC) is giving out as it encourages people
to participate in
HBC
organised walks as part of national Get Moving Week (4 to 12
October 2008).
Anyone can take part in the ‘Walking to
Health’ programme which offers 12 free walks every week within
Havant and the surrounding areas including Hayling Island,
Waterlooville and Bedhampton. Each walk lasts about an hour and is
led by a trained voluntary walk leader.
“Walking to Health is
for anyone wishing to gently increase their activity levels whilst
discovering the local area,” says Richard Wood, Health Development
Officer at Havant Borough Council.
“There is a great social element to the walks
too,” adds Richard. “And you don’t need to be an experienced walker
either as many of the routes include shorter walks which means
almost anyone can take part.”
The Walking to Health Initiative (WHI) is a
national scheme run in conjunction with Natural England and the
British Heart Foundation.
WHI
aims to encourage
people, particularly those who take little exercise, to do regular
short walks in their communities.
WHI
supports over 525
local health walk schemes of which Havant Borough Council is
one.
