Children learn how to stay safe
Over 1,300 school children will be learning some valuable
real-life lessons about personal safety when they take part in the
annual Junior Citizen event organised and funded by Havant Borough
Council
Year Six pupils from 25 junior schools across the borough will
be heading to Fort Purbrook between now and 26th September 2008 to
take part in the half day teaching sessions taking place at the
fort during the two week event.
Realistic scenarios will teach the children aged 11 about the
very real dangers they face during their everyday lives. Youngsters
could find themselves dialing 999 to report a very
realistic-looking fire, getting involved in a hands-on
demonstration of vehicle stopping distances or working with the
police on a very realistic mystery scenario.
The sessions will be led by professionals from organisations
including Hampshire Constabulary, Red Cross, Hampshire Fire and
Rescue Service, Hampshire County Council Trading Standards, Road
Safety and Havant Borough Councils Environmental Quality Rangers
which are all supporting this year’s event.
Nicki Conyard, Havant Borough Council’s Community Team Leader
said "During the two weeks we see enthusiastic young people who
really enjoy the hands-on approach to learning about their personal
safety. This is a true partnership event and we are extremely
grateful for all the support we have received this year."
Guest visitors to this year’s event will be the Mayor
and Mayoress of Havant, with Joy Okwuadigbo, Head of Regeneration
at Havant Borough Council on Monday 22nd September (12.30pm-2.30pm)
and Frank Campbell, Corporate Director and Councillor Andy Lenaghan, Havant Borough Council
on Wednesday 24th September.
