Improving Skills and Employment (continued)
Havant Skills Centre
Havant College has submitted an outline planning application to
the borough council to establish a Skills Centre in the heart of
Leigh Park, off Fulflood Road off Dunsbury Way.
The Skills Centre will be run on a partnership basis, including
Highbury College for Construction Courses and PETA for Engineering.
Courses will be based upon a flexible, skills-based curriculum
which will target those 350-plus local young people each year who
fail to progress after school and are not in education employment
or further training (
NEET
).
It will provide a vibrant atmosphere to attract and engage
learners with first class workshop facilities for level 1 and 2
vocational skills in Engineering, Construction, Hospitality and
Catering, Hair and Beauty Therapy, Child Care, and Travel and
Tourism. The provision of work experience with local employers and
the real work environment of the centre will develop both the
vocational and work-ready skills trainees need to secure employment
or further training.
With local employer sponsorship there will be a strong emphasis
on employability skills and access to employment opportunities as
incentives for hard-working trainees. For more information, visit

PUSH
Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) - was established
in 2003 to collaborate on improving the economic performance of
South Hampshire. While South Hampshire is now the largest urban
area in the south of England outside London, it still lags behind
the rest of the South East in economic performance.
Eleven local authorities including Havant joined forces to boost
the economy and improve the quality of life for thousands of
residents in the area. Their aim is to increase economic growth
(GVA – Gross Value Added, a measure of economic output) from 2.7
per cent per year to 3.5 per cent by 2026. This means adding £13bn
to the region’s economy – or about £700m a year – and will bring
South Hampshire into line with other prosperous areas in the South
East. The Havant Skills and Employability Partnership contributes
to the aims of
PUSH
.

Partnership and its newsletter please contact David Harris,
