Hayling sails into the future
Did you know that windsurfing was invented in 1958 on our very
own Hayling Island beaches by a (then) twelve year old lad called
Peter Chilvers? Therefore in the summer of this year, the 50th
anniversary of windsurfing, it seemed very fitting that we
celebrated the launch of the draft Hayling Seafront Masterplan and
the very exciting proposals to encourage the regeneration of
Hayling Island Seafront.
Members of the public commented on the proposals which include a
new watersports centre at West Beach, a tourist development with
restaurants, shops, residential and visitor accommodation and
public plaza at Beachlands and a new café and play area at Eastoke
Corner.

Havant Borough Council is considering the responses and intends
to adopt the revised Masterplan as a Supplementary Planning
Document this winter. The council has also appointed HGP Architects
to draw up more detailed proposals for the West Beach Hub in order
to apply for the external funding to create the purpose-designed
watersports centre (see sketch below) for all participants and
followers of windsurfing, kite surfing and other extreme
watersports.
