Doorstep advice on
recycling
If you live in West Leigh and Waterlooville you may have met our
Crew Liaison Officer to discuss recycling. Working with residents
and our Recycling Crews we have been advising residents what can
and can’t be put in their recycling bins.
We’ve had a very positive response to this work over the last 12
months. We have found that it is a general lack of understanding
and some confusion on what can actually be recycled, and different
recycling symbols on plastic packaging, that causes the wrong items
to be put in the recycling bin.
Right across Hampshire the only plastic which can be recycled is
plastic bottles. All other plastic must unfortunately go in your
domestic bin, or you may find another use for it.
Being able to communicate directly with residents has proved a
successful method of improving the content of recycling bins. As
always please make sure your recyclables are put in your recycling
bin clean and loose, no plastic carrier bags please, these cannot
be recycled.
All Change to Green Waste Collections
Major changes are being made to the way garden waste collections
are carried out from April 2009. Further details will be sent to
you in early December 2008 as part of a waste and recycling service
information pack. Please look out for this important information in
the winter edition of Serving You and for the early bird discount
option and revised Christmas waste and recycling collection
dates.
Make your own compost?
It couldn't be easier – just throw your
kitchen waste into the compost bin instead of the kitchen bin.
A compost heap attracts all sorts of garden
visitors. Hedgehogs come to eat the slugs, reptiles and amphibians
love the warmth and you might even be lucky enough to see a lizard
or a slow worm. And just when you think things can't get better
than that, you can get rid of all your garden trimmings – ready to
throw them back on your garden the following year.
There’s a whole heap of information and
accessories to be found at www.recyclenow.com/compost
that will help you to become an expert composter. You can purchase
a range of compost bins with names such as Can-o-Worms and Green
Cone!
