30 Day Prison Sentence for Non-Payment of Council Tax

On Friday 23rd May 2008 at Portsmouth Magistrates Court an arrest warrant issued by the Court on 1st June 2007 was used to arrest Mr Wayne Grove of 101 Priorsdean Crescent, Havant.

Mr Grove’s warrant was issued for outstanding Council Tax for the balance of £951.11 (+ £100.00 costs). He was then found guilty of culpable neglect to make payments required under Liability Orders and issued with a 30 day prison sentence.

The court also advised that on his release Mr Grove must understand that Council Tax is a priority debt and that even if he has other debts, Council Tax debts must be considered prior to all other financial matters. Failure to do so would result in further imprisonment.

Havant Borough Council is entirely committed to pursuing persistent debtors and will use any remedy available in law, including bankruptcy actions and charging orders on property, as well as applications for committal to prison.
