Children understand impaired vision
The borough council’s Disability Access Group attended the
recent annual Science Fair held by the Education Business
Partnership. This event was attended by primary schools in
Portsmouth and SE Hampshire, with the intention of linking school
education and science to the business world.

Visual Impairment was the theme of the access group, who had a
range of activities that the children could interact with,
demonstrating how, with science and technology, many things that a
person with 20/20 vision takes for granted.
An obstacle course was also set up for the children to follow
with a white cane, wearing glasses that gave a similar perspective
of someone with tunnel vision. This gave the young people a better
understanding, making them more aware to those with such
disabilities when they are out and about.
The Disability Access Group is made up of disabled residents,
staff from Havant Borough Council and support services. Their aim
is to raise awareness of disabilities and enhance the lives of
people with disabilities from across the borough. They meet
informally every fortnight at the Civic Offices as well as
attending events to make others more aware of disabilities.
