Councillors’ Allowances
An Independent Remuneration Panel, which the council is required
to appoint at least every 4 years, has reviewed the allowances paid
to Councillors.
The three members of the panel looked at the type of work
involved and the hours required to undertake the roles councillors
are expected to fulfil.
It was also recognised by the panel that an important part of
being a councillor is voluntarily serving the public and therefore
not all of what a councillor does should be paid.
After two days of intensive work the panel prepared a report,
the recommendations of which were accepted by the council with only
a few minor changes.
The new scheme of councillors’ allowances was then introduced
from 1st April 2008. It provides for the following:
The basic allowance of £5,350 per annum together with a
telecommunications and information grant of £371 per annum (plus
£90 per annum for Broadband connection used to download council
papers) for each of the 38 councillors.
