Humanism is the belief that we can live good lives without religious or superstitious beliefs. Humanists make sense of the world using reason, experience and shared human values. They believe we only have one life, and that we should seek to make the most of it by creating meaning and purpose for ourselves. Humanists take responsibility for their actions and work with others for the common good.

The BHA is the national charity representing the interests of the large and growing population of ethically concerned but non-religious people in the UK. Committed to human rights, democracy, equality and mutual respect, the BHA works for an open and inclusive society with freedom of belief and speech.

The BHA is renowned for its humanist funerals, weddings, baby namings and other non-religious ceremonies. These meet a very real need in the community, and the rapidly growing demand for high quality ceremonies keeps our networks of trained and accredited officiates extremely busy.

The Diocese of Portsmouth is comprised of 142 parishes in south-east Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It was founded in 1927 and is one of the smaller dioceses in the Church of England.

The Diocese of Portsmouth covers Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Petersfield, East Meon, Bishop’s Waltham, and the Isle of Wight.

The Diocese provides advice and support to its parishes on financial matters such as preparation for annual accounts, tax, gift aid and fundraising.

Child protection is another area covered by the Diocese. The church recognises that much of the abuse of children and young people is committed by people close them who are trusted by them, such as family members or people in the local community. There is no single way to prevent abuse, therefore various measures need to be taken to prevent or decrease the possibility of abuse.

These measures include procedures for both the diocese and parishes following the discovery or disclosure of abuse, guidance for parishes in decreasing the potential for abuse, including declaration forms and Criminal Records disclosures, advice on providing a safe environment and on recognising the signs and symptoms of child abuse and responding to its discovery or disclosure, and ongoing training.

The Diocese also gives advice and support on Human Resources, especially for parishes that are looking to employ people.

Support is also provided for schools across the dioceses of Portsmouth and Winchester in the appointment and training of foundation governors. The Diocese also assists schools in the appointment of senior staff at Church of England schools and works to promote and monitor
