The Mayor
Councillor John Smith
The borough’s 35th Mayor is now robed and ready for his busy
year. Councillor
John Smith is Havant’s first citizen for the next 12 months
following a civic ceremony of handover from former Mayor Councillor
Victor Pierce Jones.
Cllr Smith first become a councillor for Hayling East Ward in
2006, ten years after moving to Hayling Island. He started his
career as a clerk at Finsbury Borough Council followed by 30 years
as a police constable.
He said “I am very much looking forward to this busy and
exciting time as Mayor of Havant, representing the borough, meeting
people and making a difference. Victor Pierce Jones will be a hard
act to follow, however this year my wife and I will endeavour to
fulfil all our obligations to the community no matter how large or
small the event. Every engagement will carry its own
importance”.
Former Mayor Cllr Pierce Jones raised over £13,000 for his
three charities as well as visiting nearly 450 events in our
borough and neighbouring boroughs.
“The highlights for me,” he said, “were watching Havant Hawks go
to a 2-1 lead over Liverpool at Anfield during the fourth round of
the FA Cup; watching the Street Sports Finals Day at Hook Lane; and
the three Havant Youth concerts which packed the King's Theatre,
Southsea, Chichester Festival Theatre and Hayling Community Centre.
I also enjoyed meeting pensioners in their clubs and day centres to
talk about old times.
As well as representing the borough at lots of civic engagements
during his year of office, the new Mayor of Havant is also hoping
to raise money for his chosen charities: Havant Women’s Aid, Naomi
House Children’s Hospice, The Rowans Hospice and Diabetes UK –
Hayling Island Group.
