Cemetery restoration project
Work to restore one of the borough’s oldest cemeteries to its
former glory is currently under way with the help of the Probation
Service.

Working in partnership with Havant Borough Council, the Unpaid
Work Team is carrying out regular maintenance of the area by
pruning trees, planting donated bulbs, removing ivy from the walls,
clearing pathways and re-painting the original 19th Century
gates.
A waste soil area has been built from redundant groynes from
Hayling Island beach and essential tarmacking works to the paths
within the cemetery is now complete. More repair and restoration
work is set to take place to the outer walls of the cemetery.
Havant Cemetery holds a lot of the borough’s history, with the
first
burial taking place in
1896 of a man who worked for the council and was also a part-timer
fire-fighter. A small number of burials and interments of ashes
still take place there over a hundred years later.
