Private Sector Housing

The Environment Team provides advice, information and enforces relevant legislation on many aspects of private sector housing including:

• Private sector disrepair and assessment under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System – rented properties >>
• Licensed and unlicensed Houses in Multiple Occupation – flats, bedsits, shared houses, hostels etc >> 
• Accommodation certificates for immigration purposes (British Entry Clearance)
• Asylum seeker property inspections
• Referrals from partner organisations

Public Health

The service deals with a wide range of complaints and requests for assistance and advice in relation to:

• Accumulations of rubbish on private land >>
• Statutory Nuisances e.g. damp being caused by neighbouring property >>
• Drainage problems >> (excluding public sewers, which are the responsibility of Southern Water)
• Filthy and verminous properties
• Investigation of serious pest control problems >>. 
• A free pest control service for dealing with rats, mice, cockroaches and bed bugs in domestic premises >>.
