Zoo Licences
Under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981, any establishment where wild
animals (including animals, reptiles and birds that are wild in
this country) are kept for exhibition to the public for more than 7
days in a 12 month period, otherwise than for the purposes of a
circus or a pet shop, requires a licence from the local authority.
In order to issue the licence, the authority will inspect the
premises and consult other local agencies such as police, fire,
planning authority etc. Licences are usually granted for 5
years.
There are currently no premises requiring Zoo Licences
within the Borough of Havant.
A zoo is defined as an establishment where wild animals are kept
for exhibition to the public, and where members of the public have
access with or without payment. Circuses do not fall in the meaning
of a zoo.
An annual fee is required for the licence and the zoo is
inspected on a regular basis by the Council's Environmental Health
service. Follow this link to find current
licence fees >>.
The licensing of zoos is a specialist field
and the regulations are complex. It is recommended that a
specialist officer is contacted first for advice and guidance.
