Keep Warm and Well this WinterDiagram of the heat lost through a house

When it comes to rising fuel costs, many people are feeling the pinch – and the cold.  If you are not heating your home adequately, you could be putting yourself at risk of cold-related illnesses like pneumonia and making existing conditions worse.

Top tips for keeping warm

1)  Make sure your house is cold weather ready.  Is your heating system in good working order?  For those on qualifying benefits, the Government's WarmFront programme can provide up to £2700 towards the cost of a new central heating system and insulation.   Call 0800 316 6019.

2)  For those not on benefits, your utility provider may have discounted insulation offers.  For independent advice, please contact your Energy Efficiency Advice Centre on 0800 512 012

3)  Remember to keep the temperature at about 21 degrees centigrade in the rooms you stay in for most of the day.  The Council has free easy to read thermometers if you find it difficult to tell how cold your rooms are.    To claim your thermometer call 023 9244 6495.

4)  Dress Well- wear plenty of layers and put on a hat, scarf and gloves when going outdoors in the very cold weather

5)  Eat Well.  Food is the body's fuel so make sure your are eating enough nutritious food to help fight off colds and other viruses

6)   Exercise gets your circulation moving and keeps the body warm.  If you can, try to move around at least once every hour

7)   Stopping smoking will help improve your body's circulation, which is vital in the colder months

8)   Get a flu jab- Flu jabs are free if you are over 65 or if you have a respiratory condition or other serious health issues.

9)   Get all gas appliances checked by someone who is corgi registered, get any chimneys swept for ventilation

10)  Remember to look out for your friends and neighbours at this time of year.
