Think before you buy
Are you planning on buying your child a ‘mini moto’ this
Christmas?
The latest craze in motorbikes for children may seem like a
tempting festive treat but do you know what the law says about
them?
The miniature motorbikes are a scaled-down version of the real
thing and stand at around 50cm high. They function in exactly the
same way as an adult motorbike and can reach speeds of up to
35mph.
But before you rush out and spend your hard-earned cash, here
are a few points you need to be aware of:
- It is illegal to ride mini motos on roads, footpaths, housing
estates, car parks, bridleways, playing fields parks or any public
open spaces.
- They can only be ridden legally on private land and with the
permission of the owner.
- Mini motos can only be ridden on roads legally if they are
registered, taxed and insured. Riders must be at least 16 years
old, wear a crash helmet and have a valid driving licence for road
use.
- Anyone caught riding a mini moto illegally risks having their
bikes confiscated and scrapped by the police.
- They could also face a £1,000 fine plus prosecution costs.

£100,000 grant boosts StreetSport
Young people in Havant are set to benefit from a £100,000 grant
from the Football Foundation, the UK’s largest sports charity,
following a successful funding bid submitted by StreetSport.
The grant will be phased over the next three years and be used
as start up costs for several term-time after-school football clubs
across the borough. The rest will go towards expanding the popular
Street Sport programmes in which almost 3,000 young people took
part in this summer.
