Recycling
Schools in Havant have fun recycling
Research into the recycling behaviour of residents in the
borough has found that a key trigger to changing behaviour was the
influence of their children, or ‘pester power’. Recycle for
Hampshire has put this to the test with a new education programme,
to teach children in the borough why it is important to reduce
their waste and recycle, so that they learn to recycle both at
school and home.
The new programme, specially designed for children, includes fun
and practical ideas to inspire children to get involved and make
changes to their everyday lives. Every infant and junior school in
the borough has been sent a recycling pack and a special team of
Outreach Officers have so far visited 7 schools that have shown
interest in the programme, with more visits planned for the autumn
term.
The Outreach Officers speak to the children about recycling,
inspiring and enabling them to make changes themselves within the
school environment. To date over 70 schools across Hampshire have
taken part in this programme and it is proving to be a huge
success. Teachers have said it is a great scheme giving them just
the support they needed to get the school recycling.
The schools have come up with several fantastic ideas to spread
the message, including recycling themed assemblies and fashion
shows, putting recycling bins in classrooms, poster competitions
and installing compost bins for their fruit waste and paper
towels.
Schools involved are:
Mengham Junior Hayling Island, Hulbert Junior Waterlooville,
Morelands Primary Cowplain, Padnell Infants Cowplain, Barncroft
Infants Leigh Park, Front Lawn Juniors Leigh Park, Stakes Hill Road
Infants Waterlooville.

Householders turn cans into trees!
Hampshire is becoming greener in more ways than one thanks
to the combined recycling efforts of its residents. Through the
Project Integra partnership, each tonne of aluminium cans collected
was rewarded by a tree from the Aluminium Packaging Recycling
Organisation (
Alupro
). Across
Hampshire an impressive 2,000 tonnes of aluminium cans were
collected and sent for reprocessing. The 2,000 new trees have been
shared between each of the local authorities in the partnership and
Veolia Environmental Services. Havant Borough has been in receipt
of 125 of these 2 year old saplings and they have been planted in
Havant, screening off an industrial site. All this from just
recycling cans.
