Leigh Park Centre Environmental Improvements

Contractors began works on site in January 2011 along Somborne Drive. Here the works comprise the provision of better on-street parking in marked bays along the western (Park Parade and Greywell) side, with street tree planting, new paving and street furniture and a new enlarged Zebra crossing linking to the Eastern side (LIDL store side).

There are 3 other new crossings linking the Greywell pedestrian entrance to the east side, at the north near to the Crown Bingo Hall and an improved crossing at the south near to Stockheath Road. The eastern side will also be improved with tree planting along the northern (Crown Bingo) section and repaving in some sections.

Following these works they will move onto Dunsbury Way where cyclists will see improved cycle facilities with a part on road part off-road cycleway from the north into Park Parade. The total works on both sites are anticipated to take around 16 weeks.

Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council are working in partnership to implement these environmental improvement proposals. The aim of the proposals is to support the centre so that it provides an attractive and busy centre for the community, a positive impression for both residents and visitors, an environment that is safe and accessible for pedestrians of all ages and levels of physical ability in a place that residents can take pride in.

Recent development in the area means that the funding is available to help carry out these works.

Background: Consultation

Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council held a consultation during the Summer 2009 asking local people for their help to develop the initial ideas. The proposals included street tree planting in Somborne Drive, improvements to the pavements and opportunities for roadside car parking, and a new crossing area for pedestrians between Lidl and Park Parade. The ideas also featured new seats, litter bins and cycle stands creating a welcoming and attractive entrance to the centre. To see the exhibition proposals please use this link:
