Leigh Park Centre Environmental Improvements

Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council are working in partnership on the preparation of environmental improvement proposals for Leigh Park Centre, Havant.  The aim of the proposals is to support the centre so that it provides:

  • An attractive and busy centre for the community
  • A positive impression for both residents and visitors
  • An environment that is safe and accessible for pedestrians of all ages and levels of physical ability and
  • A place that residents can take pride in.

Leigh Park Centre is the focal point of Leigh Park providing a range of well used facilities including shops, leisure and business, and community amenities.  However, there are areas where it can be improved.

Recent development in the area means that funding is now available to help carry out environmental improvements in Somborne Drive and to improve facilities for cyclists in the centre.

Consultation

Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council held a consultation during the Summer 2009 asking local people for their help to develop the initial ideas. The possible improvements included street tree planting to Somborne Drive, improvements to the pavements and opportunities for roadside car parking, and a new crossing area for pedestrians between Lidl and Park Parade. The ideas also featured new seats, litter bins and cycle stands creating a welcoming and attractive entrance to the centre.

The proposals are at a very early stage of development.  Further detailed work, site investigations and approvals are all required.  However, it is planned to begin works in 2010.
