Museums

The history of the Borough of Havant spans many centuries. Settlements were already in existence long before the Romans invaded England in 43 AD. From the remains of Iron Age long barrows on Portsdown Hill, or the earthwork ring at Tournerbury, and the ring of hilltop forts to protect Portsmouth from invasion, testimony to the thousands of years of local history is everywhere.

The Borough is fortunate to have two museums dedicated to local collections of interest:

Emsworth Museum

Situated at 10b North Street, and administered by the Emsworth Maritime and Historical Trust, this local museum is open from April until the end of October, Fridays (August only), Saturdays and Bank Holidays 10.30 to 16.30, on Sundays from 14.30 to 16.30 and on Fridays in August from 14.30 to 16.30. Specialises in the history of Emsworth as a centre for oyster fishing.
