Health Development
The Council is keen to promote healthier lifestyles and the
prevention of ill health is one of our major priorities. The
world health organisation defines `health' as a `continuing state
of physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing and
not simply the absence of infirmity or disease'. Good health
is about more than avoiding physical illnesses, it is also
about our quality of life and engagement with society.
It has long been recognised that the role of the
local authorities is not only to support local health services to
maintain good health, but also to help promote healthy
lifestyles. We aim to increase knowledge about food,
exercise, accident prevention and healthy lifestyle choices so that
people can make informed decisions about how they live. We
work very closely with a number of organisations including the
NHS,
Age Concern,
the Child Accident Prevention Trust and Hampshire Fire and
Rescue in order to help people to safeguard themselves against
ill health and accidents.
Local Projects and Initiatives
Walking to Health
After being hosted by the Primary Care Trust
for five years, Walking to Health has found a new home at Havant
Borough Council. Walking to Health is part of the National
scheme, Walking the Way to Health (WHI), which was launched to
encourage sedentary people to exercise over ten years ago.
For more information go to the Walking the Way to Health Website at
http://www.whi.org.uk/
Here in the Havant borough area we soon
realised that not only are our walkers becoming fit and healthy by
joining in with the walks and helping to manage various health
problems but it’s also a really sociable way to exercise, often
with more talking than walking! Our walk leaders often arrange
extra walks, like the ones from Warblington through to Emsworth for
a pub lunch or longer walks in the summer. Our regular
walks last about an hour, encouraging people to exercise in a safe
environment and are all led by trained volunteers.
People join us for various reasons, they may
have been recently bereaved or have no one to walk with or they may
have been referred to us by their GP or Health Professional.
Others join us who enjoy exercising outdoors and knowing there is
an organised walk encourages them to come along. There are so
many beautiful, open spaces in the local area, walking is an ideal
way to discover and enjoy them, either the beaches on Hayling
Island, through the woodland in Emsworth or Waterlooville or a walk
into Havant Thicket from Warren Park. There is a led walk
nearly every day of the week and we meet all year round. All our
walks are free and everyone is welcome, although children must be
accompanied.

Sparkly Bugs
The Sparkly Bugs kit is designed to encourage children to wash
their hands thoroughly before eating. The machine, using
ultraviolet light and a special lotion, highlights where germs and
bacteria are on the skin. This equipment can be loaned to
schools or local community groups. The Council can also
organise supervised sessions.
Healthy Schools
Is your school a healthy place for pupils and
staff? How does it fit in with the rest of the community? The
Healthy Schools programme aims to enable the whole school community
to be healthy, happy, knowledgeable about health and able to work
in a safe, productive learning environment. Havant Borough
Council is involved in supporting local schools to obtain Health
Schools Status. For more information contact the Community
Development Team on 023 9244 6378
