How often is my wheeled bin collected?
Havant Borough Council runs an 'alternate weekly collection' system: one week your rubbish is collected and the following week your recycling is collected.
Please use the link Alternate Weekly Collections to find out more information.

What day is my wheeled bin emptied?

To find out which day of the week your collection is due, use the link to our online day finder or telephone/email customer services. Please ensure that your bin is put out before 7am on the day of your collection.

What day will my wheeled bin be emptied during Bank Holidays/Christmas and New Year?

To find out which day of the week your collection is due during Bank Holidays/Christmas and New Year, use the link  Public Holidays Collections. You will need to know your normal collection day to work out which day it has been changed to.

Why has my wheeled bin not been emptied?

It could be because your bin was not accessible to the rubbish vehicle and crew between 7am and 4pm, due to parked vehicles, locked gates etc. If this was not the case then please contact Customer Services.

Does the Council supply wheeled bins and is there a charge?

Yes, the Council supplies a domestic wheeled bin to each property which must be used to contain your household rubbish. The first bin is given free, but if the bin is lost or stolen then a charge of £25 will apply to replace the bin. If a second domestic bin is required due to the number of people in the family, a charge of £25 also applies.  A visit will need to be made by a Waste Advisor initially to approve the second domestic bin.  Contact Customer Services if you would like a Waste Advisor to contact you.

What size is the wheeled bin?

A standard 240lt bin will be issued and is considered ample for most families.  This bin will hold approx 4/5 full domestic

sacks of rubbish.

I have had family or friends to stay over the weekend and have generated more rubbish than normal - will the excess be cleared?

No - residents must contain all rubbish within the wheeled bin provided and the lid closed when we collect.  Any excess rubbish left alongside the bin or on top will NOT be collected and will have to wait until the next scheduled rubbish collection or be disposed of at your nearest Household Waste & Recycling Centre (HWRC).  Use the Project Integra link for a list of HWRCs in your area.

My property is not suitable for storing a wheeled bin - what can I do?

The Council recognises that some properties are not able to accommodate a wheeled bin because of the type or layout of the property, for example:-

  • terraced properties opening directly onto pavement or road and with no rear access.
  • properties with steep banks and many steps.
  • properties such as flats where all waste is contained in a shared refuse compound.
  • properties with restricted access.

Contact  Customer Services if your property has any of the above issues - each one  will be considered on an individual basis.

I have a bin cupboard at present that I store my waste in; space is going to be a problem with the new bin.  What can I do?

Restrictions on an existing bin cupboard will not be accepted as a reason for not using the wheeled bin.  We will not be able to collect your refuse unless you use the bin provided.  You must make provision and if necessary store them elsewhere.

What if I am unable to move my wheeled bin to the boundary of my property?

Wheeled bins are easier to move , however for those of you who are unable to take the bin to the edge of your property assisted collections may be available, where the rubbish and  recycling crews will collect wheeled bins from an agreed location.  Eligibility for this service is decided by a Waste Advisor after an agreed visit.

Contact Customer Services if you would like a Waste Advisor to contact you.

My refuse bin is going to smell over a two week period and I'll get maggots in my bin.

Maggots can appear within 8-12 hours of eggs being laid by flies in warm weather and have always been present on weekly collected rubbish.  These problems will not be encountered if food waste is wrapped and sealed properly in a tied plastic bag, with no holes or tears (in summer double wrapping is best).  If possible storing a bin with the lid closed, in a shady location will help.

Wheeled bins significantly reduce the ability of flies to get into bins to lay eggs.  Keeping the bins in the shade and using contact insecticide occasionally on the inside bin surfaces are also helpful.

What can I do with my garden waste?

The Council will arrange the collection of garden waste in pre-purchased green sacks or, if a large amount, at the cost of the estimated number of green sacks. Contact Customer Services for more information. Alternatively you can take your garden waste to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.

To reflect the importance of conserving natural resources starting in the home, the Council sells reduced-price composters to residents.

What category does my type of waste fit into and who should I contact?
