Havant Borough Council's Contaminated Land work spans a broad
range of duties, taking a strategic approach to inspecting the
Borough for potentially contaminated sites, and ensuring that
pollution and contamination issues are considered during the
re-development of derelict or former industrial ('brownfield')
land.
During the course of this work a large volume of environmental
information is required to assist in the preliminary appraisal of
potential contamination and associated risk. For this reason,
the Council collect & collate information on former industrial
or potentially contaminating landuses, any specific potential
contaminant sources (storage tanks etc.), the soil &
groundwater conditions, and current land uses in the area.
It is now becoming more common for this kind of environmental
information to be considered during routine sale and purchase
of property, and the provision of comprehensive environmental
information has become a further aspect to the work of the
environment team.
An overview of the contaminated land legislation, duties of
local authorities, and other information & advice is available
from the following links. This information is suitable for anyone
interested in environmental and land quality generally, and
commercial property developers interested in applying for planning
permission to re-develop a brownfield site.
