5 Shaping a new heart for the Warren

The Warren has been identified as one of the first neighbourhoods for improvement in accordance with the Strategic Framework Plan for Leigh Park. The Warren describes a readily definable community that suffers from a higher level of deprivation than other areas in Leigh Park.

The Warren residents attending the Enquiry by Design event clearly set out the issues that need to be addressed and what sort of principles form the foundation for any intervention:
  • Identify and define the principle routes through the Warren getting rid of the maze of dark alleyways
  • Address the issues relating to all the leftover spaces and parkland
  • Create safer streets, well overlooked, easily patrolled - a place where the community can come together

In particular, suggestions include:
  • A new heart for the Warren
  • Safer road alignment reducing likelihood of joyriding
  • Public square meeting point
  • Intensification of activity and community spirit
  • High quality design
  • Strong links across the neighbourhood from the school, the park and beyond

This translated into:
  • Changing the maze into recognisable blocks of housing
  • Every home gets a front door facing the street
  • Options for possible extension of private gardens or creation of communal spaces enclosed by the homes it serves
  • New development closes the blocks

Existing layout: a jumble of streets and grass areas with homes scattered around
