The Hayling Billy Trail Project - Phase 1 Layout

Work on Phase 1, from Fairfield Road to Langstone Road, started on 29th October and was completed in May 2002 with the application of the final surfacing. The civil engineering contractor involved in carrying out the construction work for the Trail was Graham Moyse Contractors Limited of Fareham, Hampshire; whilst improvements of various road crossings was carried out by Swanwick Construction Limited of Fareham.
 
The route of Phase 1 of the Hayling Billy Trail is clearly seen in the aerial image to the right, with the route of the Trail highlighted. The image is taken from roughly above Havant Station and looks southwards towards the harbour and the site of the former Langstone Bridge in the distance. The A27 trunk road crosses the image at its mid point.

In this image, the route from Fairfield Road to East Street is shown. Havant Station is bottom right of the image; Phases 1A and 1B extended the Hayling Billy Trail into the station forecourt thus enabling a fully integrated solution to transport to be achieved at this important location.

A tarmac surface was laid throughout the length of Phase 1, with loose brushed grit on top. The final stone surface, being a dressing with New Milton washed gravel to give a consistent surface throughout the Phase (see computer generated image right), was laid between 24 April and 2 May 2002. After surfacing the surface was left for a further week before being swept to remove any loose material.

The map from the link below shows the layout for Phase 1 with annotations regarding the work carried out. The Billy Trail is in red with other sections of cycle route in purple.
 
The new path is about 3 metres wide throughout except through the Town End House car park where a 2 metre width is marked out on the existing road surface.
 
The official opening ceremony for Phase 1 was held on 30th August 2002, and was opened by Stephen Norris MP , Minister for Transport.
