What services does the Council provide for recycling?

A 240 Litre capacity wheeled bin is provided to every property for recycling throughout the borough to be collected on a fortnightly basis.
Glass cannot be placed in the recycling bins for health and safety reasons - this should be taken to the local Bottle Bank. If you need a recycling container or request an extra recycling bin, please call (023) 9244 6010 or e-mail Customer Services.

All recyclable material that is collected is sent to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Portsmouth where it is sorted and distributed onwards.

For those materials that cannot be collected from the recycling containers (e.g. glass, textiles), there are various recycling points throughout the Borough. Click here for a list of the facilities.

What day is my recycling container emptied?

To find out which day of the week your collection is due, please use our online collection day finder or contact Customer Services on 023 9244 6010. Collections are fortnightly. Please ensure that your container is put out before 7am.

What day will my recycling container be emptied during Bank Holidays/Christmas and New Year?

To find out which day of the week your collection is due during Bank Holidays/Christmas and New Year, follow this link to our Waste Management pages. You will need to know your normal collection day to work out which day it has been changed to. Please follow the same link for your revised domestic waste collection day.

What can I put in my recycling bin?

  • All types of plastic bottles, e.g. milk, fruit juice, squash, mineral water, household cleaners and detergent bottles - please remove caps, empty and rinse if dirty
  • Newspapers, magazines, cardboard, catalogues, directories, cereal packets and all other paper products and cardboard packaging can be included
  • Aluminium and steel food and drink cans (please rinse out)

What is NOT accepted in my recycling bin?

Foil, polystyrene, yoghurt pots or cling film
  • Margarine or ice cream tubs, plastic bags, tetra packs - e.g. orange juice, long life milk cartons
  • Glass bottles and jars, garden waste, textiles, clothes
  • domestic waste
  • Shredded paper

For health and safety reasons and to avoid contamination of other recyclable materials, please do not put glass in your recycling container. All glass (bottles and jars) should be taken to your local bottle bank for recycling.

Where can I recycle other items (such as glass, textiles etc)?

Click here for a list of recycling facilities in the Havant Borough.

Why is glass not collected?

Fragments of broken glass can contaminate other materials, which cannot then be recycled. Please take glass to your local recycling banks.

What do I do with blue glass?

Blue glass can be placed in a green bottle bank.

Why doesn't the Council collect mixed/other plastics?

  • FINDING SOMEONE TO BUY THE MATERIAL - Although we have a good market for plastic bottles, we have taken the decision not to collect other types of plastic packaging for a number of reasons. Firstly the only market for this material at the moment is in Asia, which means there would be a high environmental cost to transport the plastics in terms of fuel use and air pollution. We have little information about what happens to the material once it gets to Asia, including how much is actually recycled and what kind of conditions the people who sort it work under.
  • HAVING ENOUGH SPACE - Plastic packaging also takes up a lot of space in wheeled bins, collection lorries and the MRF recycling facility. To change the scale of everything just to collect material which has a low value - and may be exported - would not be making the best use of our space, time or Council Taxpayers' money.
  • GETTING PLASTIC MIXED UP WITH OTHER MATERIALS - The MRFs also have advanced automatic sorting mechanisms that are not designed to cope with plastic packaging so accepting it would cause problems including slowing down the whole system and contaminating other recyclable materials.
  • FOOD SCRAPS - Lastly, plastic packaging is often used for food. The problem is not everyone cleans these containers before they are put out for recycling, as they are asked to, which means the material can end up being very smelly and contaminating other clean materials like newspapers, reducing their value.

All these problems can be solved in time and we are working towards that. In the meantime we can do more for the environment by concentrating on increasing the amount of recycling of materials we can easily process.

Where is my nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre or Tip?

Where should I put my recycling bin to be emptied?

On your collection day, you should place your recycling bin at the boundary of your property adjacent to the road. If you have a wheeled green bin, please make sure the handles are facing the road as this makes it easier for the recycling collectors. Your bin should be out by 7am on the day of collection (or the night before!).

Why has my recycling bin not been emptied today?

If your recycling bin was out before 7am and there was no obstruction or access problems for the refuse vehicle and crew, then arrangements may be made for it to be emptied. Either call (023) 9244 6010 or e-mail Customer Services.

What can I do with my garden waste?

The Council will arrange the collection of garden waste in pre-purchased green sacks or, if a large amount, at the cost of the estimated number of green sacks. Either call (023) 9244 6010 or e-mail Customer Services. Alternatively you can take your garden waste to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre or purchase a reduced price compost bin.

How can I comment on the Recycling services provided by the Council?

We welcome all feedback about the services that we provide. If you have a comment, compliment or suggestion to make about our recycling services please click here for an on line form, or contact Customer Services on (023) 9244 6010.
