Feral Pigeons

Feral Pigeons

       Pigeons cause several problems:
  • they foul on the pavements causing them to become slippery and dangerous
  • buildings and car paintwork are damaged due to the acidic nature of droppings
  • they carry diseases such as salmonella via droppings and can distribute mites into buildings.
Havant Borough Council can only provide advice on pigeon problems and is not in a position to provide pigeon control. The responsibility lies with the owners of the properties on which they roost. Help and assistance can be obtained from private pest control companies. These can be found in the Yellow Pages under Pest and Vermin control.

About Feral (Wild) Pigeons:

History

Feral pigeons are descended form domesticated strains of rock doves. Their breeding is supplemented by escapees from pigeon lofts.

Colour

Colour is usually slate blue/grey with black wing bars, but can vary from white, blues and reds to completely black.

Size

They are about 33cm (13 inches) long and weigh between 280-560g (10-20oz).

Breeding

There are no visible differences between the sexes. They are capable of breeding throughout the year, although peak periods are between March and July, therefore nests can be found at any time.

Why shouldn't I feed them?

Some people like to feed town pigeons. These birds seem harmless enough, pecking around for food, but they foul the pavements and surrounding areas and can also carry diseases.

Feeding the pigeons provides an easy source of food for them and attracts more pigeons into the area. The more abundant the food sources, the more successfully they breed, greatly increasing the problems associated with them. The best long-term method of reducing the size of a pigeon population is to restrict the supply of available food. To stop feeding the pigeons is cost free and has significant benefits.

What problems do pigeons cause?

Droppings

Not only can the droppings be very slippery, especially in wet weather, but they are also acidic and damage buildings and paintwork on vehicles.

Dampness

Accumulations of pigeon droppings and nesting materials in pipes and guttering can restrict drainage and cause dampness in a building.

Diseases

Pigeons can spread diseases such as salmonella via droppings and can distribute mites into a building.

Control Methods

There are various chemicals and physical devices for deterring pigeons. These include spikes and netting to discourage roosting; shooting; and trapping. Due to cost implications, removing their source of food is by far the best option.
