After much deliberation, I have decided that my charities for this coming Mayoral year 2012/2013 will be as follows:-
The Portsmouth and East Hampshire branch of The Samaritans
(Registered Charity No. 243227).
This is my main named charity.
They provide a listening service for those in need. This service is entirely voluntary. They also provide a “listening ear” service for those in Kingston Prison. Their website is www.samaritans.org/portsmouth/
In addition I have chosen three other charities that I wish to support and these are:-
FLASH (Family Liaison Autism Support Havant)
(Registered Charity No. 1104885).
This is a voluntary group who provide help and support for those families with Autistic children.
Whilst conditions such as Down’s Syndrome are visually apparent, Autism is something that cannot be seen. Autism is a disability causing social interaction and communication difficulties. For someone with autism everyday life can seem chaotic and confusing. The impact of autism can be debilitating, and isolating, both for the person with autism and their family. Many people find it helpful and comforting to meet other families who share the same anxieties and problems as themselves.
I would like to dedicate my charitable support for FLASH to the memory of David Farrow, who, along with Hilary Farrow, was instrumental in making the charity a reality. Their website is:- www.flashonline.org.uk/
CancerWise
(Registered Charity No. 290574)
This is a charity giving support for those suffering from Cancer. This, non-medical, support includes psychological support, group activities and complementary therapy. CancerWise started in Havant and is currently based in Chichester. They hope to be able to open a new centre in the Havant area and, at the moment, cover the area between Fareham and Worthing. Their website is:- www.cancerwise.org.uk/
Smile Support & Care
(Registered Charity No. 1047359)
Smile is an Eastleigh based charity who are currently raising funds to build a respite centre alongside Rachel Maddocks Special Needs School in Eagle Avenue, Cowplain. This charity started in 1994 with three carers and now has a staff of more than 160, giving over 1,300 hours of care each week. Their website is:- http://www.smilesupport.org.uk/
I also intend that, once again, there will be a pot of money to be distributed, at the end of my year, to other local charities.
Applications for funding from this element of the Appeal are to be made in writing. Application forms to apply for funding will be available in January 2013 and applications will need to be submitted by 8th April 2013.
