Cockroaches
Cockroaches are not a common problem in the
Borough of Havant. However, the two main types that are found in
Britain are the Oriental and German varieties.

| The Oriental Cockroach |
The German Cockroach |
- The Oriental Cockroach is the more
common of the two types, can grow to 24mm long and is a shiny dark
brown to black colour.
- The German Cockroach is 10-15mm
long and is a yellowish-brown colour. Cockroaches are usually found
in cracks and crevices and their presence is normally detected by
their faecal pellets or a characteristic smell if present in large
numbers.
They are a health risk as they
carry various pathogens and can cause contamination of food from
their faecal pellets, moult debris and dead bodies.
Havant Borough Council does offer a
disinfestation service where a trained operative is sent in to
spray the house in question with insecticide. Prevention is of
extreme importance e.g. preventing cockroaches from entering with
incoming food. Sound building structure is also important to
eliminate harbourage.
