Enjoy your Bar-B-Q
- Choose a sheltered site, away from fences, plants, sheds or
anything else which might catch fire.
- Only use lighter fuel designed for barbecues - not petrol,
methylated or white spirit.
- When using lighter fuel, place the container well away from the
barbecue before attempting to light it. Be sure you haven't spilled
any on your clothes or the grass.
- Follow manufacturers' instructions and don't add more fuel
after lighting the barbecue.
- Have a multi-purpose fire extinguisher nearby, or a bucket of
water or sand. However, beware of steam if water is used to
extinguish the fire in an emergency.
- Do not wear loose clothing that might catch fire if the flames
flare up.
- Keep children at a safe distance.
- Never move a lit barbecue.
- Use suitable long handled utensils and oven gloves.
- Extinguish the fire before leaving it unattended.
- Ensure ashes are completely cold before removal.
- Store gas bottles in a secure, cool place.
Eat safely
- Defrost meat in the refrigerator before cooking and keep it
there until needed.
- Keep food cool, covered and off the ground.
- Make sure your pets are kept well away.
- Light the barbecue well in advance and make sure the coals are
glowing red (with a powdery grey surface) before starting to
cook.
- If possible, pre-cook all poultry in the microwave oven or
traditional cooker, then take it straight to the barbecue to finish
it off.
- Wash your hands often, especially after handling raw food.
- Eat the food as soon as it is ready.
- Throw away all the perishable food that has been left outside
for more than a couple of hours.
