A ward ranked 1st in any of the above domains would represent the ward of greatest deprivation (of the domain type) in the country. Equally so a ward ranked 8414th would represent the area of least deprivation (again of the domain type) in the country.

  • The index of multiple deprivation ranking is derived from the other seven indicators and aims to give an indication of the wards overall position.
  • The income domain ranking was calculated by looking at a number of indicators ranging from population on Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance to households on Family Credit Schemes.
  • The employment domain ranking was calculated by looking at those ward residents who were out of work.
  • The health domain ranking was calculated by looking at mortality ratios, underweight births and the numbers in receipt of disability or incapacity benefits.
  • The education domain ranking was calculated by looking at indicators such as the numbers of adults with no qualifications, children 16 and over not in full time education, proportion of 17+ population who have not successfully applied for HE, and absenteeism.
  • The housing domain ranking was calculated by looking at the number of homeless households, household overcrowding and those in poor private sector housing.
  • The access domain ranking was calculated by looking at people's geographical access to services including access to a post office, food shops, primary schools and a GP.
  • The child poverty index ranking was calculated by looking at the percentage of children aged 0-16 yrs living in families which claim means tested benefits.
