The Coastal Defence Team
The Coastal Defence Team is a small group of
officers who manage the Borough's coastline. The Coastal Defence
team has a wealth of local knowledge and experience of the
coastal problems particular to our coastline.
What are we doing?
- Liaison with organisations, bodies and individuals with an
interest in the management of the coastal zone, including SCOPAC (Standing Conference On Problems Associated
with the Coastline).
- Develop strategic plans for the future management of the
coastline and ensure their implementation.
- Ensure that developments within the coastal zone do not
adversely affect the environment.
- Avoid committing future generations to inflexible and expensive
options for coastal defence.
- Monitoring the evolution of the coastline and the waves and
tides affecting it.
- Where appropriate, implement the construction of suitable
coastal defences.
- We have a link to the 'CHIMET' service which provides residents
and marine users with real time information on wave heights, wind
speeds etc from the Chichester Bar Beacon at the mouth of
Chichester Harbour (in association with Chichester Harbour
Conservancy, Chichester Harbour Federation and the RNLI)
How are we doing?
The list above is an outline of the services we provide. The
other items in the menu give much more detailed information. Once
you have read this information, we would be grateful for your
feedback on how you think we are doing. In particular, we would be
interested to learn whether you think we are doing enough to
preserve and maintain the Borough's coastal environment. Do
you think it is important that the Council continues this
work?
