The placing and erection of signs on the public highway is strictly controlled. A misplaced, confusing or distracting sign can be the cause of an accident.

Members of the public should never erect their own signs - including 'birthday banners' - on the highway. We will remove such signs and prosecute those who put them up.

Signs to special events are co-ordinated through the specialist  RAC or AA Signs Units.

Signs related to the operation of the highway are strictly controlled in size, location and appearance, to designs laid down by Government. Signs away from the highway erected by the Council generally follow the same conventions as those on the highway in order to avoid confusion.

More information about the signs used on England's road network can be found in the Highway Code (external site) >>
