Conservation (Buildings)
The Borough currently has 14 conservation areas, 278 buildings
of special architectural or historic interest (listed buildings)
and some 82 buildings that have been identified as being of local
interest.
The Council's Conservation Officer is based within Development
Control in a team that deals with Enforcement, Trees and
Conservation and are able to offer guidance regarding the
maintenance and alteration/extension of historic
buildings.
The Conservation Officer can be contacted on 023 9244 6529
(Tuesdays only). The Council supports the custodians of
historic buildings by offering grants on a discretionary basis
towards the cost of repairs to listed buildings and buildings of
local interest.
Further information can be obtained by contacting the
Conservation Officer directly. The Team also provides advice
in relation to development proposals affecting listed buildings and
conservation areas as well as other aspects of the historic
environmental including, where appropriate, any proposed
environmental enhancement schemes.
Given the statutory protection afforded to listed buildings and
sites within conservation areas, it is strongly advisable to
contact the Council before carrying out works to such buildings or
in such areas.
It is important to be aware that carrying out unauthorised works
can be a criminal offence. A list of protected buildings,
ancient monuments and details of the conservation areas can be
viewed at the Civic Offices during the hours stated above.
