Havant Borough Council is supporting Fairtrade Fortnight from
28th February to13th March, in Havant, with a number of events and
activities across the borough.
This year’s focus for Fairtrade fortnight is for everyone to
‘show off’ about buying Fairtrade and spread the word of how your
choices to buy fair-trade products support farmers and workers in
developing countries.
Schools and churches will be holding events throughout the
fortnight. On Tuesday 8th March St Mary’s Church Hall, Hayling
Island is holding a Fair Trade Coffee morning on behalf of the
three Anglican churches on Hayling 10.45 am – 12.00. As it is
Shrove Tuesday there will be Pancakes with Fair trade sugar and
honey!
Havant United Reformed church is hosting a Fairtrade meal at on
15th March, at 7pm for 7:30pm tickets are available from Sue James
02392 250267.
The after dinner speaker at this event will be Greg Valerio, who
was involved with launching Fairtrade and Fairmined gold in the UK.
This will provide a lifeline for thousands of impoverished
small-scale and artisanal miners in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and
Peru who find themselves at the mercy of unfair markets.
Councillor Gwen Blackett of Purbrook Ward in the
borough said; “The Fairtrade fortnight is a great opportunity to
raise the profile of the good work that the organisation is
carrying out.
“I will certainly be supporting this very worthy cause
throughout the fortnight by attending events across the
borough.”
Fairtrade offers 7.5 million people in the developing world a
more secure future. This means a guaranteed income above world
market prices and extra money for community projects like schools,
wells and health centres.
