Local Walk 3: Havant to Brockhampton

This walk should take about an hour and a half if taken at a leisurely pace.

The walk starts from the southern forecourt of Havant Railway Station.

Walk south through Market Parade, and cross Elm Lane by the pelican crossing. Turn right and walk along Elm Lane towards Park Road North, passing the Bus Station on your left. At the Park Road North junction, turn left, and when you reach McDonalds cross Park Road South using the pelican crossing.

Continue southwards (left after crossing) until you almost reach Burger King. Take the shared footpath / cyclepath to your right, and keeping Burger King on your left, cross the footbridge over the Lavant Stream and continue to Solent Road. Cross Solent Road with care and proceed forwards, keeping Tesco to your right and the Lavant Stream to your left.

The shared path passes the remains of the old Town Mill on your left, before passing under the A27 on a walkway elevated above the stream. Once out of the underpass, continue southwards along the bank of the stream along what becomes an unmade path. Cross straight over the access road into Langstone Technology Park and, with the stream on your left, continue along the unmade path until you reach the coast at Mill Lane. You are now joining the Solent Way and Wayfarers Walk Long Distance Paths for the next mile or so, and these are clearly waymarked.

Continue forward to follow the footpath along the coastal sea wall, heading generally southwards and then westwards, latterly heading towards the high green mound at the south end of Southmoor Lane. There are fine views across to Hayling Island and the small islands in Langstone Harbour. In the distance high buildings in Portsmouth dominate the skyline.

Continue westwards following the shoreline, including a short section where there is no marked path across the beach. Eventually the path turns inland, running eastwards and following an inlet with Bedhampton Quay on the opposite shore. Dredgers are often alongside at this point, and it is worth watching the unloading operation which has to take place between tides.

You are now following the Brockhampton Stream. Keeping the stream on your left, follow the path until it crosses the stream by a small bridge. Immediately upstream of the bridge is an old weir marking the site of Brockhampton Mill. Kingfishers are often to be seen in this area.

Follow the path until it reaches Harts Farm Way. Leaving the Solent Way and Wayfarers Walk, turn right, and proceed along Harts Farm Way until the roundabout. Cross Southmoor Lane with care and continue eastwards into Brookside Road, until you reach another roundabout. Cross Brookside Road here, and follow the shared cycleway / footpath first northwards and then eastwards until reaching the underpass. From here, retrace your route back to the Bus and Rail Stations.
