News Release

2nd February 2010

New section of the Hayling Billy Trail to be opened

Walkers and cyclists are being invited to attend the opening of the latest section of the Hayling Billy Trail that has been undergoing work, later this month.

The recently completed cycle route is part of sustainable transport charity Sustrans’ 12,000 mile National Cycle Network, which is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary this year. The new route runs between Langstone Avenue, across the A3023, coming out just north of the Langstone Sailing Club.

It will be officially opened at 10.30 am on the 26th of February by Havant MP David Willetts. Simon Pratt (Sustrans’ Regional Director) and Havant Councillor Jenny Wride will also be speaking at the event. Residents Associations, Hampshire County Council representatives, Councillor David Guest, the Mayor of Havant Councillor Jackie Branson and Havant Borough Council Corporate Director, Janet Rees have also been invited.

Members of the public who would like to take part can come along to the Langstone Road junction with Mill Lane as well, however to promote healthy living and prevent congestion, everyone who attends is being asked to consider cycling, walking or using public transport.

A Get Active Havant exhibition will also be held to accompany the opening. The scheme encourages residents to undertake 30 minutes of physical activity, such as cycling, at least 5 times a week.

Councillor Jenny Wride, whose portfolio includes cycling, says: “The Hayling Billy Trail is part of a wider commitment that Havant Borough Council has to cycling with further projects planned for the future.”

“The completed sections of the Billy Trail now run from Havant Railway Station to the Station Theatre on Hayling Island with an on road route to Hayling Ferry. It’s also hoped that Havant Borough Council will obtain funds to complete the two small missing sections north and south of the Hayling bridge.”
